How to Care for Your Surfboard and Fins: Maintenance Guide
Share
Proper maintenance extends the life of your surfboard and fins by years. A few simple habits prevent costly repairs and keep your equipment performing at its best.
After Every Session
Rinse with fresh water:
- Remove salt, sand, and debris from board, fins, and leash
- Pay attention to fin boxes and screw areas
- Let everything dry in the shade, not direct sunlight
Board Care
Preventing pressure dents:
- Store board face-down or on a soft rack
- Use a board bag for transport and storage
- Avoid leaving in hot cars (heat softens foam)
- Repair dings immediately — water in foam causes delamination
Repair basics:
- Small dings: Solarez or epoxy putty
- Cracks: Professional repair recommended
- Never surf with a ding — water absorption destroys foam cores
Fin Care
Keeping fins in top condition:
- Check fin screws after every session
- Remove fins for travel to prevent box damage
- Clean fin tabs with a soft cloth
- Inspect for cracks, especially at the base
When to replace fins:
- Visible cracks in the base or tip
- Permanent deformation or "packing out"
- Reduced performance or unusual flex
- Damaged tab or mounting system
Travel Tips
For air travel:
- Use a padded board bag with fins removed
- Wrap fins individually in bubble wrap or cloth
- Place fins in the center of the bag, surrounded by soft items
- Label your bag with contact information
For car transport:
- Secure boards with soft ties, not ratchet straps directly on the rail
- Don't overtighten — compression causes damage
- Keep boards out of direct sun when parked
