How to Read Surfboard Dimensions: Length, Width, Thickness & Volume
Share
Every surfboard has a set of dimensions that tell you exactly how it will perform. Understanding these numbers helps you choose the right board without guessing. Here's what every measurement means.
Length
Measured from nose to tail in feet and inches.
What it affects:
- Longer boards → More speed, easier wave catching, more stability
- Shorter boards → More maneuverability, tighter turns, less stability
Common ranges:
- Longboards: 8'0" - 10'0"+
- Funboards: 7'0" - 8'0"
- Shortboards: 5'0" - 6'8"
Width
Measured at the widest point of the board, in inches.
What it affects:
- Wider boards → More stability, easier paddling, better for beginners
- Narrower boards → Better rail-to-rail transitions, more responsive
Common ranges:
- Beginner boards: 22" - 24"
- Performance shortboards: 18" - 20"
- Fish boards: 20" - 22"
Thickness
Measured at the center of the board, in inches.
What it affects:
- Thicker boards → More volume, more buoyancy, easier paddling
- Thinner boards → Lower center of gravity, better wave connection
Common ranges:
- Beginner/intermediate: 2.5" - 3.25"
- Performance shortboards: 2.0" - 2.5"
Volume
Measured in liters (L). This is the total displacement of the board.
What it affects:
- Higher volume → Easier to paddle, catch waves, and stand up
- Lower volume → More responsive, sinks into the wave for control
Volume guidelines by weight:
- 60-70kg rider: 25-35L (shortboard), 40-50L (funboard)
- 70-80kg rider: 28-38L (shortboard), 45-55L (funboard)
- 80-90kg rider: 32-42L (shortboard), 50-60L (funboard)
How to Use These Numbers
- For beginners: Prioritize length (8'+) and volume (50L+)
- For intermediates: Balance volume with maneuverability (35-45L)
- For advanced: Match volume to your weight and conditions (25-35L)
