Understanding Surfboard Fin Templates: How Shape Affects Performance
Share
Not all surfboard fins are created equal. The template — or outline shape — of a fin determines how water flows around it, directly affecting speed, hold, and maneuverability. Here's what you need to know about fin templates and how to choose the right one.
What Is a Fin Template?
A fin template is the 2D outline shape of a fin when viewed from the side. It defines the base width, tip width, height, rake (sweep), and foil profile. Small changes to any of these dimensions create noticeably different ride characteristics.
Key Template Dimensions
Base Width:
- Wide base → More drive and power through turns
- Narrow base → Faster pivot and tighter turns
Fin Height:
- Taller fin → More hold and stability at speed
- Shorter fin → Looser, more playful feel
Rake (Sweep):
- More rake → Longer, arcing turns; better for pocket surfing
- Less rake → Quick, responsive turns; ideal for vertical surfing
Tip Width:
- Wider tip → More projection out of turns
- Narrower tip → Fin releases more easily
Popular Template Categories
Pivot Templates:
- Upright, narrow base with moderate rake
- Ideal for tight turns in the pocket
- Best for: Shortboard performance surfing
Running Templates:
- Wider base, moderate height
- Balanced drive and pivot
- Best for: All-around performance, most popular choice
Area Templates:
- Large surface area, wide base
- Maximum hold and stability
- Best for: Big waves, powerful surfers, longboards
How to Choose Your Template
- For tight pocket turns → Pivot template
- For all-around performance → Running template
- For big waves and stability → Area template
- For your weight: heavier riders need larger templates
